Anglican Cathedral

ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL (Liverpool Cathedral), St. James Road. In 1953 PAUL auditioned here for a place in the choir but was rejected because his singing voice 'was not good enough'. He returned June 28th, 1991 for the world premiere the 'Liverpool Oratorio' he had written in collobaration with CARL DAVIES to celebrate the 150th anniversary of of The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

9 Madryn Street

9 MADRYN STREET in The Dingle was RINGO STARR's birthplace on 7 July 1940 and home 1940-1946. Ringo was only three when his mother ELSIE and father RICHARD split up, leaving Ringo often with Grandma and Grandad Starkey, who lived further down the street at No 59.

High Park Street is the place of THE EMPRESS pub. Yes, it's the same as you can see on RINGO's album SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY. Look here below.

Edwina and Bengt (that's me!)

How nice to meet Liverpool's best Beatle guide again -EDWINA!!

The beginning of Penny Lane

PENNY LANE. JOHN has explained that when he wrote this song with PAUL, he was re-living his childhood. He lived in Newcastle Road, just around the corner from Penny Lane, for the first 11 years of his life. Daily for six years he walked down Penny Lane to and from school.

The bank

"On the corner is a BANKER with a motorcar,
The little children laugh at him behind his back.
And the BANKER never wears a mac
In the pouring rain - very strange..."

The Penny Lane roundabout

"Behind the shelter in the middle of the ROUNDABOUT, the pretty nurse is selling puppies from a tray..."

The barber

"In PENNY LANE there is a BARBER showing photographs of ev'ry head he's had the pleasure to know..."

12 Arnold Grove

12 ARNOLD GROVE in Wavertree was GEORGE HARRISON's birthplace on 24 February 1943 and home 1943-1950. He lived here with his sister LOUISE, brothers HAROLD and PETER, mother LOUISE and father HAROLD.

197 Queen's Drive

197 QUEEN'S DRIVE was BRIAN EPSTEIN's  home. JOHN, who lived not too far away from here, was a regular visitor, sitting with BRIAN in the morning room as they planned The Beatles' career.

To a historic place now...

St Peter's Church Hall

The sign says it all!

ST PETER'S CHURCH HALL. On 6th July 1957 THE QUARRY MEN played at the village fete, held in the field behind St Peter's church. The 15 years old PAUL had cycled there with his class-mate IVAN VAUGHN, and saw The Quarry Men for the first time performing THE DELL-VIKINGS' 'Come Go With Me' and other hits. Afterwards, in THE CHURCH HALL across the road, PAUL and JOHN were introduced by IVAN, their mutual friend. PAUL impressed JOHN with his guitar playing and singing 'Twenty Flight Rock'. (He knew all the worlds!) Later PAUL was eventually invited to join The Quarry Men. But it wasn't until 18th October 1957 that PAUL made his debut with The Quarry Men. The rest is history...

"Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to..."

"...Nothing is real. And nothing to get hangabout..."

Strawberry Fields

STRAWBERRY FIELD, Beaconsfield Road, was opened as a Salvation Army Children's Home in 1936. Initially a large Victorian mansion, but demolished in the late 60's. As a young boy JOHN LENNON would come here with his AUNT MIMI to join in the fun of the Summer Fete. A place in his heart! John made a donation for the new annex, opened in 1979.

251 Menlove Avenue

The new sign

251 MENLOVE AVENUE, called 'MENDIPS', was JOHN LENNON's home 1945-1963. He lived here with AUNT MIMI and UNCLE GEORGE, after his mother JULIA had left him here for his auntie to bring up. A neat semi-detached suburban home. John did not come from the slums of Liverpool! On the second floor over the entrance, you can see the window of his bedroom. There, he and Paul wrote 'Please Please Me', 'I'll Get You', 'I Call Your Name' and 'Hello Little Girl'.

Back to PENNY LANE...

The fire station

"In PENNY LANE there is a FIREMAN with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the Queen.
He likes to keep his FIRE ENGINE clean, it's a clean machine..."

Woolworth, Penny Lane

WOOLWORTH, Penny Lane. As an art student CYNTHIA (later JOHN's mother) worked here at the summer holidays serving behind the cosmetics counter.

Back to the Penny Lane Roundabout

"PENNY LANE is in my ears and in my eyes,
There beneath the BLUE SUBURBAN SKIES...
PENNY LANE!"

Back to THE CAVERN...

Johnny Silver

JOHNNY SILVER is from Germany. He and his band gave us a fine concert with lots of John's numbers.

Hard Night's Day

This was the perfectly right place for HARD NIGHT'S DAY to perform - The Cavern! It was at this stage THE BEATLES performed the same songs as we heard today. The highlights - 'Be-Bop-A-Lula', 'Sweet Little Sixteen', 'Your Feets Too Big', 'I'm Talking About You' and 'Kansas City', just to mention a few.

Yes, party again today! We return to CHAVASSE PARK...

The Fab Faux

THE FAB FAUX FINALE at The Royal Court Theatre became an unforgetable memory for the rest of our lives! Never Beatles music has been played better! And what a great support the band got from the PHILHARMONIC HALL horn-players!
