LIVERPOOL BEATLE WEEK Sunday 24 August 2003 Beatles Convention at
The Adelphi
BEATLES CONVENTION at The Adelphi! What a hectic, wonderful and expensive day! Lots of items to buy - books, records, memorablia and much, much more. We go to the Ballroom for
some interesting interviews.
This must have been a unique occasion! Cannot imagine that all these Wings members have been interviewed together before. And a very interesting and generous interview we got from these nice gentlemen. STEVE HOLLEY was member of the Wings 1978-1981. Played on 'Back To The Egg' sessions including the legendary 'Rockestra' in October 1978, featuring stars like Pete Townsend, Kenny Jones, Hank Marvin, Ray Cooper, Dave Gilmour, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, Gary Brooker and Ronnie Lane. HOWIE CASEY is a true Liverpool legend. He and his band The Seniors was the first Mersey Beat group to play in Hamburg, where they met The Beatles. The Seniors disbanded in 1962 and Howie joined Kingsize Taylor & The Dominoes and returned to Hamburg's Star Club. Howie have played on several of the Wing's albums like 'Band On The Run', 'Wings At The Speed Of Sounds', 'Wings Over America' and 'Back To The Egg'. Along with Steve Holley, Howie worked on the 'Rockestra' and 'Kampuchea' projects. And then the final Wings Wourld Tour. DENNY SEIWELL was the Wing's first drummer joining the band in 1971, although he had already worked with Paul as drummer on the 'Ram' album. HENRY McCULLOUGH auditioned for the new band and he and Denny appeared on the first Wings album 'Wings Wild Life' and 1973's 'Red Rose Speeway'. Denny and Henry toured with PAUL, LINDA and DENNY LAINE from February 1972. After the Bond theme 'Live And Let Die' and two short tours in 1973, both Denny and Henry decided to leave Wings.
ROBERT WHITAKAR was The Beatles' official photographer during 1964-66. He managed to compile a remarkable dossier of the 20th century's most astounding musical phenomen. No one will forget the 'Butcher Cover' and many more classical photos. This week he guested his wonderful exhibition at Mathew Street Gallery signing posters. I managed to find a copy of the beautiful out-of-print book 'Unseen Beatles' at the Convention for only £10 and have it signed by Robert. And here it is....
TONY SHERIDAN met The Beatles in Hamburg in the early 60's. John, Paul, George, Stu & Pete became the resident backing band for Tony at the Top Ten Club. Tony Sheridan was offered a recording contract by Bert Kaempfert and took The Beatles along to accompany him. The recordings was released in 1961 under the name Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers. 'My Bonnie' became a minor hit.
JACKIE
LOMAX started his musical career in Liverpool in 1961. He joined
The Undertakers in 1962. Later that year they
went to Hamburg like many Mersey groups did then. In 1968 he got a
recording contract by Apple Records, the
debut being the single 'Sour Milk Sea'
written and produced by George Harrison. It
was a star-studded recording session: George
Harrison (rhythm guitar), Paul McCartney
(bass), Ringo Starr (drums), Eric
Clapton (lead guitar) and Nicky Hopkins
(piano). Unbelievable! But nothing happened with the record. None of the
star's names on the record label! And on the same day 'Hey
Jude' with The Beatles and 'Those
Were The Days' with Mary Hopkins was
released. Talk about competion! Time for music now. We go to Crompton's Foyer Bar...
REPEATLES from Stockholm, Sweden. One our favourites this year. A short solid concert. More excellent music from Sweden. We rushed to Crosby Suite...
In the meantime in the Adelphi Ballroom...
RINGER! This was a magic night! First a bunch of solid Beatle music. Then by request some Beach Boys music: 'God Only Knows' first. So beautifully sung!!! We were in heaven! How can you sing these harmonies so perfectly live? Then rock, rock, rock - 'Do It Again'! When will we hear a Beach Boys concert? CLUBE BIG BEATLES next...
CLUBE BIG BEATLES! What can you say?! This was another highlight! I wonder if we've ever heard them better! 'Instant Karma', 'Imagine'!!! And 'Hey Jude' with half of the audience on stage! Then 'Helter Skelter', 'Day Tripper'... Wow! More great bands...
Time for the best Beatle Tribute Band in the world - THE FAB FAUX!!!
Watch out! Jack is coming...
This was a chock! No one would believe you, if you tried to tell what you witnessed tonight! But here's the proof! (Well, I don't show everything - the finale!) But Jack has never performed the song better! What a show!
That's all for today - GOODNIGHT! All photos and text by Bengt Wärmlind. This page updated 19th April 2004.
