LIVERPOOL BEATLE WEEK Friday 27 August 2004 Great
bands
at The Rawhide Comedy Club,
We went to the Rawhide Hide Comedy
Club at Central Hall.
JOHNNY SILVER and his band gave another great concert.
THE PARROTTS are currently resident band at the Abbey Road Club in Tokyo, Japan. This professional band has played at many Beatle Weeks. Mamoru Yoshii's version of 'Mr Moonlight' has become a Liverpool classic!
CLUBE BIG BEATLES from Brazil made their 10th year appearing in Liverpool this year. Only a great band gets this opportunity! New member Leo Vaccari played a wonderful version of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. One of my favourite Beatle songs! After a little break we went to Cavern Back...
GREEN VILLAGE. The members are only 18 years old. The band, supported by a big crowd of Swedish fans, gave a very entertaining concert. They played in Liverpool already in 2000 at Quarry Bank School under the name of Two Of Us. Another concert with one of our new favourites...
THE QUARRYMEN. This young band from Argentina already in 2000 had played their 100th show in La Fluvial. Members are Franco Maccagno (vocals), Federico Martin (guitar/vocals), Leonardo Monaco (bass/vocals), Agustin Vit (drums/vocals), Sebastian Boeris (keyboards) and Ronniffer Ronston (lead guitar). Together with Los Blackbird they were chosen as the winners of the Battle of the Bands competion during the Latin American Beatle Week in 2003, the prize being inclusion in Liverpool Beatle Week 2004. And they showed their happiness during the whole week, on and off stage. Their versions of 'Back In The U.S.S.R.' and 'I'm Losing You' were outstanding with Franco's soulful voice and Ronniffer's crisp guitar. Plus a special pounding beat from the rest of the band.
No photos from the Royal Court Theatre this year. (With one exception.) The dimly lit stage and the longer distance to the stage compared to last year only gave me inferior photos. Won't publish them, since last year's photos were so great. Sorry! (Please don't send me any photos! See last page, Tuesday.) We go to the Adelphi...
Well, now I feel a little ashamed. Cannot understand how we could miss Jon Keats and Yoko Ono (Victoria Sharpe) in the Adelphi Lounge! Probably we got stuck with some nice friends and looked at some great band at the Adelphi. We started the hectic night at Fridays Bar....
THE REPEATLES from Sweden is one of the very best 60's tribute bands. Members are Jan Leonard (guitars, vocals), Arnie Brox (bass, vocals), Pete Beck (guitar, vocals) and Steve Kling (drums). The band not only gave us excellent versions of Beatle songs like 'I Should Have Known Better' but also songs from other bands from 60's, one of the highlight being The Byrd's single B-side 'I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better' by the late Gene Clark.
ACÚSTIKA - also one the very best bands in Liverpool this year. These four Brazilian women played wonderful, unusual interpretations of songs from The Beatles to Coldplay, using classical instruments like the violin, flute, piano alongside electric guitars, bass and drums. Their exquisite vocal harmonies, exciting musical arrangements and lively performances were outstanding. A very good band! Members are Tayana Dantas (vocals, guitars), Jane Soren (violin, vocals), Luciana Guessa (bass, vocals) and Cláudia Moreno (drums). We go to Crompton's Foyer Bar...
THE PRELLIES - Wow! This was fantastic! The Prellies from Birningham sounded like the raw, mean rock'n'roll band The Beatles once was in the Hamburg St Pauli scene in the early 60's. 'What Did I Say?', 'Shakin' All Over', 'Hippy, Hippy Shake' and the rough finale 'Shout'!!! What a show! And all these GIRLS! A night to remember! We return to Fridays Bar...
LUCY IN SKY comes from Germany. We only heard a few seconds of their last song. So no review here. Another of the very best bands now...
RINGER. This excellent Scottish band has played at Beatle Week for over 20 years. A very musical band! Not many can play Beatle songs like them. They really 'yel'. And the encore - The Beach Boys classic - 'Do It Again'!!! The vocal harmonies and the band's rocking beat - Pure magic! All photos and text by Bengt Wärmlind.
