LIVERPOOL BEATLE WEEK Saturday 28 August 2004 Mathew Street Music
Festival at Pier Head. Time for the...
We went down to the River Mersey and the main stage at Pier Head...
Now, one of the main reasons for our visit to Liverpool - ROCKS OFF!!!
ROCKS OFF were one of the very best Tribute Bands to play at Beatle Week 2003. Not bad for a Stones band! Coming from our homeland Sweden, this band always perform at their best. And everytime some new unusual blues songs - at every concert! We had decided to see all of their seven Liverpool gigs this year. (We'll see how that succeeded.) Frontman Tony Johnson (vocals) has got the right sound and looks. And how he moves! Like a 25-year younger Mick Jagger! Awesome! Other members are Roger Mikander (guitars, vocals), Lars Elf (guitars, vocals), the cool Torgny Ehrieder (bass) and Pär Lilja (drums). Another great Swedish band - LIVERPOOL!!!
LIVERPOOL made their 10th year appearing in Liverpool this year! No wonder! Everyone wanna listen to this excellent band. And they are also some very nice people! Members are Sebastian Roos (guitars, lead vocals), Ronnie Roos (bass, vocals), Kent Szwonder (drums) and Olle Nilsson (guitars, lead vocals). Some Queen music now...
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, or Dios Salve A La Reina as they are also called, is Argentina's most popular Queen Tribute Band. As you can see, Pablo Padin IS Freddie Mercury on stage! And now - the most welcomed comeback of them all - THE OVERTURES!!!
THE
OVERTURES returned to Liverpool for their 7th Beatle Week
appearance. How we longed for you last year! Veterans Dennis
Pugsley (bass, vocals), Steve Phypers
(drums, vocals) and Chris Skornia (keyboards,
vocals) were now joined by two new guitarists - Jamie
Cook and Phil Evans. Jamie's
voice - so strong and soulful!!! His versions of The Who's 'Pinball Wizard'
and Rod Stewart's 'Handbags And Gladrags'!!! The Overtures will perform at Älvshögsborg in Trollhättan, Sweden on 30th October 2004 together with the top bands Rocks Off, Lenny Pane and Lawrence Gilmour & Itchycoo Park. We return to the Cavern Pub and our new rock'n'roll heroes...
THE PRELLIES - how we love you! Now we stood on first row, one meter from the stage. Fantastic to see their hard-rocking show at such short distance. This was Sweat and Joy! - shout! - Shout!!! - SHOUT!!!!! Back to the Adelphi and a great meeting with one of our very best friends...
We return to Crompton's Bar and one of the week's very best concerts...
ROCKS OFF!!! Tonight you probably played your best gig ever! First the acoustic part. Unbelievable versions of 'Wild Horses', 'Little Red Rooster', 'Angie' and many more. And then the hard-rocking finale!! 'Honky Tonk Women', 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', 'Brown Sugar' (your best!) and more. We were in heaven!
The American Bar next...
JAN OWEN from U.S.A. brought his highly acclaimed one-man show to Liverpool for the first time. How he did perform the backwards guitar lick in 'I'm Only Sleeping'? He sang it! A great surprise now - an exclusive little performance...
FRANK AGNELLO from The Fab Faux gave us many great acoustic versions of the early Beatles solo material. PAUL's '3 Legs', 'Take Me Away', 'Another Day' and 'Heart Of The Country', GEORGE's 'Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)' and 'Sunshine Life For Me (Sail Away Raymond)', JOHN's 'Isolation' and 'Old Dirt Road' and more. Standing so near the stage, it was thrilling to see how skilful Frank was playing his guitar. And his voice - so soulful! A wonderful musician and friend. (Perhaps this was a foretaste what will happen next year? See Bill Heckle's announcement about the 2005 Beatle Week programme on the Tuesday 31 August page.) All photos and text by Bengt Wärmlind.
