LIVERPOOL BEATLE WEEK Saturday 29 August 1998
We visit Concerts
with But first a short visit to the...
"Behind the shelter in the middle of the ROUNDABOUT, the pretty nurse is selling puppies from a tray..." PENNY
LANE. JOHN LENNON has explained that when he wrote
this song with Paul, he was re-living his childhood. He lived in
Newcastle Road, just around the corner from Penny Lane, for the
first 11 years of his life. Daily for six years he walked down
Penny Lane to and from school. The next stop - STRAWBERRY FIELD!
"Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to..."
"...Nothing is real. And nothing to get hangabout..."
STRAWBERRY FIELD, Beaconsfield Road, was opened as a Salvation Army Children's Home in 1936. Initially a large Victorian mansion, but demolished in the late 60's. As a young boy JOHN LENNON would come here with his AUNT MIMI to join in the fun of the Summer Fete. A place in his heart! John made a donation for the new annex, opened in 1979.
251 MENLOVE AVENUE, called MENDIPS, was JOHN LENNON's home 1946-1963. He lived here with AUNT MIMI and UNCLE GEORGE, after his mother JULIA had left him here for his auntie to bring up. A neat semi-detached suburban home. John did not come from the slums of Liverpool! On the second floor over the entrance, you can see the window of his bedroom. There, he and Paul wrote 'Please Please Me', 'I'll Get You', 'I Call Your Name' and 'Hello Little Girl'.
20 FORTHLIN ROAD was the home of PAUL McCARTNEY 1955-1963. Paul's mother MARY lived here only for a year before she died in cancer, leaving father JIM lonely with Paul and his brother MIKE. Behind the window was the living-room, where PAUL and JOHN wrote many of The Beatles' classics like 'I Saw Her Standing There', 'Love Me Do', 'When I'm Sixty-Four', 'I'll Follow The Sun', 'One After 909', 'She Loves You', and others. The house is now totally renovated by THE NATIONAL TRUST, returning the house to the appearance it had in the McCarney's time. Even the furniture is the same! On the walls MIKE McCARTNEY's haunting photos of the family hang. The house was newly opened for the public by The National Trust. For us few who got tickets, it was the same magic feeling as to get inside Abbey Road Studios! Sitting in the same room, where many of The Beatles' most famous songs were written, cannot be described! To see the garden on the backside, seen on many photos, was also an emotional feeling for me. Even papa JIM's resting-chair was there!
After a short lunch at the pub - MORE MUSIC!
THE OVERTURES was an EXCELLENT band playing all 60's hits from The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, The Hollies and The Beach Boys. All complete with exciting multimedia effects. Here you can see The Beatles in action.
CHATTANOGA played The Beatles almost 'unplugged'. Ulla liked them very much. And now... The HIGHLIGHT of the week! LENNY PANE from Sweden!
LENNY PANE made a fabulous entrance with 'Your Mother Should Know'! Encore!!
And here we are! THE LENNY PANE SCRUFFS!
LENNY PANE had got the honour to play on Saturday night as one of the very BEST bands during the Beatle Week. And they PLAYED GOOD! And what an audience! Everyone sang every word on every song as loud as they could! It's hard to describe the feeling for us LENNY PANE SCRUFFS, standing there right in front of the stage, listening to our heroes from home. And that in the hometown of The Beatles!
